"We need new thinking and new action if are truly to do something different in health care" was the statement made by Tony Young, the NHS National Clinical Director for Innovation at the Wired Health event in April 2015. New thinking an new action in health care is something that has been discussed and implemented in recent years, yet Young is not a man to do things by halves and believes that there is the potential to build what amounts to a mini Silicon Valley within the bureaucracy of the NHS.

The NHS - An Opportunity for Innovation and Optimisation

“We need new thinking and new action if are truly to do something different in health care” was the statement made by Tony Young, the NHS National Clinical Director for Innovation at the Wired Health event in April 2015. New thinking and new action in health care is something that has been discussed and implemented in recent years, yet Young is not a man to do things by halves and believes that there is the potential to build what amounts to a mini Silicon Valley within the bureaucracy of the NHS.

The NHS is a national treasure but also a tenfold challenge and one where risks cannot be afforded. NHS England sees one million patients every 36 hours and it employs over 1.4 million people. Innovation at scale is needed within the complex, unified, enormous system that is theNHS.

At the Wired Health event, Young also stated “failure in my view is when you don’t learn when you get it wrong.” With our software, WorkPal it is easier to keep tabs on what is going wrong within hospital departments. The data is there in real time with prompts for each member of staff to have one to one meetings regularly with the senior staff in their department. WorkPal is a piece of software that can be used to drive change within the NHS. It is a source of constant administration and feedback to individuals working in the NHS, departments, hospitals and the organisation as a whole.

Welcoming WorkPal to the market is an opportunity to create a working model not just an academic study of how to run an organisation. With the support and cooperation of the NHSand its staff, WorkPal illuminates priority areas to managers, rather than realising too late that there is a problem. It has the potential to improve departments of the NHS quickly when the technology falls into the hands of the right managers who can use the data they gain from the technology, to reach effective solutions. WorkPal enables smarter communication within the industry.

Digital disruption is happening across almost every industry with many being reshaped by digital technology and those who aren’t are being left behind. Whilst not a business the NHScan still reap the results of using technology to collect and analyse data every step of the way to improve upon.

Tony Young wants to make innovation everyone’s business so that that the NHS and its millions of users will benefit. The size and complexity of the NHS is what gives it the opportunity to be one of the World’s most innovative medical systems but will need to start with NHS foundations and departments taking steps to do something different, embrace technology and use it to make positive changes.
